THRIFTED • Director Chairs

Let me start off by saying I was not looking for these in any way shape or form, it was purely a discovery via Facebook Marketplace. I was up rather late one night doing my usual cruise of Kijiji and Marketplace. Not looking for anything in particular but it is so fun to see what treasures someone is getting rid of. I found the ad for these “Director Chairs” that had been posted five days prior, which made me think someone probably had scooped them up already and the ad was just dead. Thanks to these fancy new built in “Hi, is this item still available” premade messages, I literally did nothing and rolled over going to sleep.

To my surprise I woke up to a message from the seller who was currently on vacation but I could take a look once he returned. Now that I knew they were available I couldn’t decide if I really wanted them or if they were a responsible financial decision. I eventually decided just to go see them and go from there (which basically means im buying them I’m just trying to fool myself).  

Once I arrived the seller had them set up and displayed and i instantly fell in love. Game over. Originally built in 1960, the four Telescopic Director Chairs were assembled in Upstate New York then spent their life at Florida before eventually making it to Halifax, Nova Scotia. I have a future post on thrifting furnishings coming soon but this is what I love about sourcing vintage pieces, they always have a story!  

Arriving home I had basically played a mini version of an install day, folding the chairs up into a couple different scenarios. I’ll be moving in the coming months so I’ve started my collection for the new space and how I want to design it. I’m not 100% sure how I’ll use these just quite yet but having the arms folded down to make side table surfaces is a great idea so far. I’ve mentioned this before but I love the look of stacked books. Always have, always will. Sue me. I just shoved a couple heavy books under the base for aesthetic purposes and I actually really dig it.
